Prevalence of ankle accessory muscles: a cross-sectional study

Objective: Determine the prevalence of accessory muscles around ankle patients with pain using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and evaluate its correlation other foot disorders. In addition, better understand association muscle types pain, mechanical due to compression forces structures or neuropathic mass effect tarsal tunnel. Methods: The MRIs obtained from 2007 2017 were retrospectively studied analyzed by a radiologist specializing in pathologies. A total 9,600 scans after pain; 31 had at least one muscle. Results: symptomatic was 0.32% (31 feet). It found 45.2% cases. considered an incidental finding 32.3%. Tarsal syndrome main clinical presentation 19.4%, 16% causes disorders: 10% peroneal tendinitis, 3% Achilles tendinopathy, plantar fasciitis. 35% flexor digitorum, 32% peroneus quartus, 19% fibulocalcaneus internus, 13% soleus, 6% tibiocalcaneus internus. Conclusion: Although rare, can contribute various presentations that confound diagnosis even appear as on MRI should be management pain. Level Evidence III; Therapeutic Studies; Retrospective cohort study.
